Magical Moment 614, "Running Buddies"

A ribbon of gray pavement ran through the deep woods, holding back the thicket of bare tree branches that grabbed at it and tried to swallow it up. It was closed off to cars, allowing mothers pushing strollers, dog-walkers, and runners like me to have the path to ourselves. Only today, I was its only visitor, or so I thought.

Down the straight path, in the early morning darkness, I noticed silhouettes ahead of me. It looked like...dogs. A pack of dogs in the woods? I had just seen the "The Grey" the previous night, a movie about man-eating wolves in Alaska, and suddenly slowed my pace. I squinted. Not wild dogs, greyhounds! I could tell now that their lines were slender and sleek, and for a moment, I rationalized that there was a dog park just a mile up the road. A greyhound lover must be out walking with their dogs and let them off the leash. I jogged forward and all of the sudden, through the shadows cast by the rising sun behind the trees, I saw a spec of white on one of the dogs. One by one, these white specs popped up as they trotted across the road. It was the white tails of deer!

With the mystery solved, I continued onward until I came to the spot in the road where they had crossed. I looked to my right, preparing to stretch my eyes once more and capture a glimpse of them bounding away. But there they were, standing still. Feet away from me. There were 5 that had inched down the side of the hill, and paused to turn their heads back. And one that was right next to the road. He had turned around to face me. They waited for me to catch up to them.

I stopped running and turned towards the deer. "Hello." I said.
And we stood staring in each other's eyes for nearly a minute.
Finally, his rest was over. He must have told his friends, "Come on, let's keep going." And off they went into the woods.
I said, to no one in particular, "I better keep going." And off I went down the path.

What a beautiful picture you've painted w/your deer friends! Brave girl you are, running at dawn, not knowing what you might literally run into. Though, it sounds (looks!) like a wondrous and peaceful place for a solitary jog.

Are you listening to music when you run, or is your own, original, melody chiming in your mind? :)

Oh, how I love this! I felt like I was with you...and really, your running is the most exercise I had today!
I'm SO glad they were not wolves!
We had two deer jog out in front of our car this morning...they were ever so casual.

Beautifully-written portrait of a perfect run
You've painted a lovely picture with your words. What a nice treat to encounter on your morning run. My nephew and his wife are planning to run the Marine Marathon in D. C. in October. They've done half-marathons before, but never a full one. They have my admiration, as do you.

That does sound like a magical moment. Isabel, our greyhound does remind me of a deer.

Beautiful! They were definitely saying hello and checking you out. What a wonderful description.
OH! My walking companions yesterday, aside from the beagle, were 2 frogs and a turtle!

Oh what a treat. They're usually so timid.. they must have sensed a loving heart.
Glad you solved the mystery after watching that movie...neat story, keep running safely

If I was guaranteed a visit like that on a run, I'd start jogging :-)

Although a picture may be worth 1,000 words, your description put me right there on the path.

Magical Moment 620, "Lilac Garden"

Eddie and I visited the Lilac Gardens at Ringwood Manor in New Jersey, a pristine and beautiful state park with 8 species of lilacs and several varieties within. We went on a rainy afternoon, which turned out perfect because the rain stopped for us when we got there, and began again as soon as we left. It also decorated the plants with gorgeous rain drops, adding to their beauty.  And now for a quick game of "Where's Elizabeth?" And "Where's Eddie?" ~~Have a great weekend! ~~

Magical Moment 625, "Thailand - the Elephants"

Needless to say, my favorite part of our Thailand vacation, was our week long volunteering at  Elephant Nature Park ! The logging industry was banned in Thailand in 1989, leaving thousands of elephants unemployed. These elephants are now used for tourism. You may have heard of elephant shows featuring the animals playing soccer or painting pictures with their trunks. They are no doubt amazing to watch, but the sad truth is that these elephants have gone through a series of torture and abuse to "break their spirit" by their trainers. This short clip is very hard to watch, but it will give you an idea of what the elephants in captivity in the country of Thailand go through. The only elephants in Thailand who do  not  endure this, are the very few baby elephants who are first generation born in "safe captivity" at places like Elephant Nature Park. Every other elephant at this park has been brutally abused. Some have been blinded by their owners, le

Magical Moment 606, "Thank You Canada!"

After an intense week as a participant in the  Musician's Mentorship Program  with Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto, I am back in the good ol' US of A. The trip was a success, not only did I learn a TON in the program, but I got to see Canada for the first time, increasing my number of countries visited to 3! (Mexico and South Korea, if you're wondering about the other 2). I was surrounded by incredibly talented musicians who didn't hesitate to dish out their best advice, tips, and secrets to me. In addition, I was surrounded by some beautiful scenery and amazing sights. The trip got even better when Eddie flew out to meet me half way through the week, and even BETTER when I was able to meet up with a friend, known only through the blogosphere until now. Yes ladies and gentlemen,  Hilary of The Smitten Image  herself happens to live only minutes from where I resided in Toronto. I admit, it was a little like meeting a celebrity. I first "met" Hi
