Magical Moment 415, "Long Lost Twins"

I love visiting old, cluttered antique shops. I love rummaging through the mess and spotting something that sparks an old memory. I think, Oh I remember seeing something like that in my grandma's basement. And then for a minute, I can reminisce over that thought.

Sometimes the feeling is so overwhelming, I just have to buy whatever it is I see. When we lived in North Carolina, I found this doll and I couldn't believe it! It was just like one that my mother had as a little girl. I remember because I played with her too. Her name was Hilda. I bought the doll, took pictures, and e-mailed them to my mom. A short time later, she sent me her doll Hilda because she thought they should be together. I know nothing about the two dolls except they are identical down to the hand stitched lace on their bonnets, and their hair is a different color. They now sit together on my shelf, thankful to have found each other again after all these years.

Only a few short days ago, in Sleepy Hollow, NY, I discovered another remarkable find. I immediately recognized her long, flowing skirt. My mother had given me her old figurine just this last Christmas. She now sits on a glass shelf in my hallway. I picked up her win at the antique store and brought her home. On the bottom of each girl's skirt are the hand-etched words, "Josef Originals." It makes me think that maybe there are more out there. At least these two have each other now.

I'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together

Mmm, it's always better when we're together
Yeah, we'll look at the stars when we're together
Well, it's always better when we're together

That is so interesting about the dolls. I'd love to know the history of Hilda's twin. Where has she been all these years? Was she loved and played with, or did she sit on a shelf in an enclosed case?

The two figurines are lovely, and your photograph of them, with their reflection in the table's surface is just beautiful.

In a book about girls, I read that we "give life to everything." I believe it. We played with our dolls as little girls and still, as adults, we find beauty in them and see them as lifelike.

I have a few of my own. :)

Nice song.

What a wonderful find. I think like Linda does.. what has her life been like all these years. Maybe they're now catching up with one another.
Linda, It would be great to know her story. It's fun to think about. :)

Dawn, Jack Johnson is great. Had that tune stuck in my head as I was writing this one. :)

Anita, I never thought about that before, but I think you're exactly right! I do that A LOT! Lol! Thanks for the comment.

Hilary, Wondering that myself. It might make a good story some day. :)

Magical Moment 620, "Lilac Garden"

Eddie and I visited the Lilac Gardens at Ringwood Manor in New Jersey, a pristine and beautiful state park with 8 species of lilacs and several varieties within. We went on a rainy afternoon, which turned out perfect because the rain stopped for us when we got there, and began again as soon as we left. It also decorated the plants with gorgeous rain drops, adding to their beauty.  And now for a quick game of "Where's Elizabeth?" And "Where's Eddie?" ~~Have a great weekend! ~~

Magical Moment 625, "Thailand - the Elephants"

Needless to say, my favorite part of our Thailand vacation, was our week long volunteering at  Elephant Nature Park ! The logging industry was banned in Thailand in 1989, leaving thousands of elephants unemployed. These elephants are now used for tourism. You may have heard of elephant shows featuring the animals playing soccer or painting pictures with their trunks. They are no doubt amazing to watch, but the sad truth is that these elephants have gone through a series of torture and abuse to "break their spirit" by their trainers. This short clip is very hard to watch, but it will give you an idea of what the elephants in captivity in the country of Thailand go through. The only elephants in Thailand who do  not  endure this, are the very few baby elephants who are first generation born in "safe captivity" at places like Elephant Nature Park. Every other elephant at this park has been brutally abused. Some have been blinded by their owners, le

Magical Moment 606, "Thank You Canada!"

After an intense week as a participant in the  Musician's Mentorship Program  with Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto, I am back in the good ol' US of A. The trip was a success, not only did I learn a TON in the program, but I got to see Canada for the first time, increasing my number of countries visited to 3! (Mexico and South Korea, if you're wondering about the other 2). I was surrounded by incredibly talented musicians who didn't hesitate to dish out their best advice, tips, and secrets to me. In addition, I was surrounded by some beautiful scenery and amazing sights. The trip got even better when Eddie flew out to meet me half way through the week, and even BETTER when I was able to meet up with a friend, known only through the blogosphere until now. Yes ladies and gentlemen,  Hilary of The Smitten Image  herself happens to live only minutes from where I resided in Toronto. I admit, it was a little like meeting a celebrity. I first "met" Hi
